Overview
Lemosho is one of the most scenic and popular Kilimanjaro routes. It starts on the quiet western side, crosses the Shira Plateau and gives your body time to adjust to the altitude, which improves your chances of reaching the summit.
Day by day
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi or Arusha
Your driver meets you at Kilimanjaro Airport and takes you to your hotel. Your guide checks your gear and gives a full briefing on the climb.
Overnight: Hotel in MoshiDay 2: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Drive to Londorossi Gate for registration, then to Lemosho Gate (about 2,100 m). Hike through lush rainforest, where you may see colobus monkeys and birds, to Mti Mkubwa Camp (about 2,820 m). Walking time is about 3 to 4 hours.
Overnight: Mti Mkubwa CampDay 3: Mti Mkubwa to Shira 2 Camp
Leave the forest and climb into open moorland with wide views across the Shira Plateau. Camp at about 3,850 m. This is a long day of around 6 to 7 hours.
Overnight: Shira 2 CampDay 4: Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Climb to Lava Tower (about 4,600 m), then descend to Barranco Camp (about 3,950 m). Going high and sleeping low is the key to adjusting to altitude.
Overnight: Barranco CampDay 5: Barranco to Karanga Camp
Climb the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rocky section with great views, then continue across ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp (about 4,000 m).
Overnight: Karanga CampDay 6: Karanga to Barafu Camp
A short walk up to Barafu Camp (about 4,650 m). You eat early, rest and prepare for the summit attempt.
Overnight: Barafu CampDay 7: Summit Day, Uhuru Peak
Start around midnight and climb slowly by headlamp. Reach Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) at sunrise. Descend to Mweka Camp (about 3,100 m). This is a very long day of 12 hours or more.
Overnight: Mweka CampDay 8: Mweka Gate and Departure
Walk down through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, collect your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration lunch.

Overview
Marangu is the oldest and most direct route up Kilimanjaro. You sleep in mountain huts with beds instead of tents, which many climbers find more comfortable. It is a shorter route, so good fitness and a steady pace are important.
Day by day
Day 1: Arrival in Moshi
Airport pick-up, transfer to your hotel and a briefing with your guide. You check your gear and meet the mountain crew.
Overnight: Hotel in MoshiDay 2: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
Register at Marangu Gate (about 1,800 m) and walk through rainforest to Mandara Hut (about 2,700 m). The trail is gentle, about 4 to 5 hours.
Overnight: Mandara HutDay 3: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Leave the forest and climb into open moorland with views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Reach Horombo Hut (about 3,720 m) after 6 to 8 hours.
Overnight: Horombo HutDay 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Cross the high alpine desert known as the saddle to Kibo Hut (about 4,700 m). Rest and eat early before the midnight summit start.
Overnight: Kibo HutDay 5: Summit Day, Uhuru Peak
Start around midnight and climb steadily to Gilman's Point and then Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) for sunrise. Descend to Kibo Hut for a rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut.
Overnight: Horombo HutDay 6: Horombo to Marangu Gate and Departure
Walk down to Marangu Gate, collect your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi for your flight or onward travel.
