Rising to 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is the second highest peak in Tanzania and one of Africa’s most rewarding trekking destinations. Formed around 250,000 years ago after a powerful eruption that shaped its dramatic profile, the mountain offers a unique and scenic alternative to more crowded climbs.
The ascent begins in Arusha National Park and passes through a variety of vegetation zones. You will move from dry forest into lush mountain rainforest, then into open shrubland, and finally into alpine terrain near the summit. As the landscape changes, so does the wildlife along the way you may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, baboons, colobus monkeys, and different antelope species.
For safety, all treks are accompanied by an armed park ranger due to the presence of wildlife. The standard climb takes four days, allowing for proper acclimatization and a steady ascent.
Important: The final summit stage includes a few exposed and unsecured sections. Good balance, confidence with heights, and steady footing are essential. In poor weather conditions such as heavy rain, fog, or icy paths, the ranger may decide to stop the ascent for safety reasons. Climbing during the rainy season (April and May) is not recommended due to challenging conditions.
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed and transferred to Meru View Lodge, located in Usa River on the outskirts of Arusha.
The rest of the day is yours to relax and settle in after your journey. In the evening, you will attend a detailed briefing about your upcoming trek, where your guide will go through the route, equipment, and important tips for the climb.
Dinner and overnight at Meru View Lodge.
In the morning, you will be picked up from your lodge and driven to Arusha National Park, where your guide will complete the necessary registration at the entrance gate. Once everything is ready, you will continue to Momella Gate, the starting point of your 4-day trek on Mount Meru.
Accompanied by an armed ranger, your hike begins across open grassland where you may already spot giraffes and buffaloes. The trail then leads into acacia forest along the southern route, offering a scenic and gradual ascent.
After about two hours, you will reach Maio Falls, a great place to rest and enjoy a picnic. The trek continues to the famous Fig Tree Arch, a natural landmark along the route.
By late afternoon, you will arrive at Miriakamba Hut, where you can relax with tea and snacks. Dinner and overnight at Miriakamba Hut.
In the morning, you will begin your ascent along a steep trail with wooden steps, gradually gaining altitude. The air becomes cooler, and the forest often fills with low-hanging clouds, creating a quiet and atmospheric setting as you move through dense vegetation.
After about two hours of climbing, you will reach Mgongo wa Tembo (Elephant Back) at around 3200m, where you will stop for a well-earned break and enjoy the views. From here, the landscape begins to change, transitioning from rainforest into open heath and moorland.
You will arrive at Saddle Hut around midday. In the afternoon, there is an optional hike to Little Meru (3820m), which takes about 1–2 hours. From the summit, you can enjoy wide views over Arusha National Park and, on clear days, even spot Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.
Back at Saddle Hut, you will have a warm meal and rest early, as your wake-up call for the summit attempt will be just after midnight.
After a light snack and tea, you will leave camp at around 2:00 am and begin your summit ascent on Mount Meru. Using headlamps, you will follow the trail through bushland towards Rhino Point (3821m).
From here, the route becomes steeper and more demanding, with some sections requiring careful footing. You will walk along the crater rim over volcanic ash and rocky terrain as you continue your climb in the early hours of the morning.
After approximately 4–5 hours, you will reach the summit at Socialist Peak. From the top, enjoy a spectacular sunrise with views stretching toward Mount Kilimanjaro and across Meru’s dramatic crater and central ash cone.
After spending some time at the summit, you will descend along the same route back to Saddle Hut for a short rest with hot soup and tea. Once refreshed, you will continue down to Miriakamba Hut, arriving in the early afternoon tired but rewarded after a successful climb.
After breakfast, you will begin your descent along the northern route, a 2–3 hour trek back to Momella Gate. Although shorter than the ascent, the trail still offers good chances to spot wildlife such as elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and black-and-white colobus monkeys.
Upon arrival at the gate, you will say goodbye to your hiking crew before meeting your driver for the return journey. You will then be transferred back to Meru View Lodge, where you can relax, celebrate your achievement, and enjoy your final night.
After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey.
Alternatively, you may choose to extend your trip with a safari adventure or unwind along the white sandy beaches of the Indian Ocean, creating the perfect ending to your Tanzania experience.
