The accessible gateway to southern Tanzania safaris
Mikumi National Park is a national park in southern Tanzania that can be reached by road from Dar es Salaam. It is known for the Mkata floodplain, elephants, giraffes, zebra, lions and hippos.
Mikumi lies in the Morogoro Region, close to the Uluguru and Udzungwa mountains. The Mkata floodplain forms the open heart of the park, where wildlife is easy to see on game drives.
Because it is close to Dar es Salaam, Mikumi works well for short trips, families and travellers who want a first safari without long flights. It is also a natural stop on routes toward Udzungwa Mountains, Nyerere and Ruaha.

Experience Mikumi your way
Mikumi is compact and relaxed. Spend a day or two on game drives, or use it as an opening chapter before a longer southern safari.

Game Drives on the Mkata Floodplain
Look for elephants, giraffes, zebra, wildebeest and impala on the open plains, with lions and other predators in the mix.

Zebra, Impala and Plains Game
Large groups of grazers use the floodplain, especially in the drier months.

Giraffes and Photography
Mikumi’s giraffes are a highlight, often seen against open skies and acacia trees.

How Mikumi compares with other Tanzania parks
Mikumi is an easy, shorter safari rather than a remote wilderness trip.
Mikumi vs Nyerere
Nyerere (Selous) is larger and known for boat and walking safaris. Mikumi is closer and quicker to reach.
Mikumi vs Serengeti
Serengeti is far larger and famous for the migration. Mikumi is a compact, accessible alternative.
Mikumi vs Ruaha
Ruaha is more remote with big lion and elephant numbers. Mikumi is easier for short trips.
