A remote soda lake and an active volcano in northern Tanzania
Lake Natron is a remote alkaline soda lake in northern Tanzania near the Kenya border and an important breeding area for lesser flamingos. Nearby, Ol Doinyo Lengai, the “Mountain of God” in Maasai, is an active volcano that erupts unusual carbonatite lava.
The area lies in the Gregory Rift in the Arusha Region, where heat, salt and red-tinged water create a landscape unlike the savannah parks. Lake Natron is about 60 km long and is fed mainly by the Ewaso Ng’iro River, so its colour and level change with the seasons.
This is a destination for adventure and photography rather than classic game viewing. Visitors come for the lake scenery, flamingos, waterfall walks, Maasai culture and, for fit hikers, a night climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai.
