About Katavi National Park

Remote western Tanzania, where hippos and buffalo gather

Katavi National Park is a remote national park in western Tanzania. It is known for large hippo pods, big buffalo herds, elephants and very few other visitors, especially in the dry season.

Katavi lies in the Katavi Region near the town of Mpanda. It was a game reserve before becoming a national park in 1974, and it is among the largest national parks in Tanzania. Floodplains, miombo woodland and seasonal lakes make up much of the landscape.

Katavi is far from the main safari circuits and most visitors fly in. That distance is the appeal: wildlife-rich dry-season riverbeds, uncrowded game drives and the chance of walking safaris with experienced guides.

Katavi vs Other Parks

How Katavi compares with other Tanzania parks

Katavi is a destination for travellers who want a quiet, remote wildlife experience.

Katavi vs Ruaha

Ruaha is larger, has strong lion and elephant numbers and is more established. Katavi is more remote and quieter, with a hippo-and-buffalo focus.

Katavi vs Serengeti

Serengeti offers the Great Migration and more visitors. Katavi gives a much quieter safari with fewer vehicles.

Katavi and Mahale

Many travellers combine Katavi with Mahale Mountains, adding chimpanzee trekking on Lake Tanganyika.
