Chimpanzee trekking beside Lake Tanganyika
Mahale Mountains National Park is a remote national park on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. It is famous for chimpanzee trekking in forested mountains with no roads inside the park.
Mahale covers about 1,613 km² in the Kigoma Region and was established in 1985. The park has no roads or infrastructure inside its boundaries. Access is by light aircraft and boat across the lake, and exploring is on foot or by boat along the shore.
The park protects one of the largest known chimpanzee populations in Tanzania, along with red colobus monkeys, forest birds and other wildlife. Between treks, the clear water and sandy beaches of Lake Tanganyika make this a rare safari that finishes at the water’s edge.
